Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a teenager when her father who was a carnival barker died. Her mother had to take on jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. Following only two school years she left for an acting career. The path was difficult to take. Even though she got an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. Earned money doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
